The GOP can easily vote against troop funding if it’s ladened with some form of liberal pork without any fear of reprisal. It’s simply because the public can’t conceive of Republicans not supporting the troops, while conversely they know deep in their hearts that Democrats hate the military.

When R's were in, they shrouded the WH in secrecy, questioned the patriotism of those opposing war funding, and decried anyone who would filibuster a Supreme Court nomination. Now that they're out: complaining about WH secrets, voting against war funding and threatening to filibuster a Supreme Court nominee.

When the D's were out, they complained about the secret meetings at the WH and promised transparency if elected, decried the cost of war funding (remember the campaign's “peace dividend') and threatened to filibuster Supreme Court nominees. Now that they're in: secrecy at the WH is justified, war funding is suddenly important and they decry filibustering Supreme Court nominees.

The usual hypocrisy, lack of consistent principle and inside-out logic that defines modern American politics.
