More people do not fear the large government because the number of Americans who work in the private sector and do not do significant business with the business is shrinking. As the number of Americans who work for the government, depended upon government funding such as college professors, or depend upon government contracts grows, the number of people who want a small government shrinks.

If you want to see the future of the U.S. look at Chicago where having contacts and contracts with the government is the best path to success.
