Thanks dr. e.

The letters in the book go back to the late 1700s and offer a fascinating view on American history.

Here is one written to the Republican Argus, Northumberland, Pa. on May 25,1808

TEN DOLLARS REWARD

RAN AWAY

On Sunday the 24th of April, from Hope furnace, Derry Township in Miffin county, a Negroe man named Carlos, above 23 years of age; about 5 feet, 2 or 3 inches high. He had on when he went away, a fine linen shirt, a nankeen coat, a white dimity jacket, yellow corded pantalons, a pair of clouded cotton stockings and a pair of fine rounded-tip shoes. He is very talkative and full of spirits. And he is a good workman in a forge, he will probably offer himself for employment in some part of this state. Ten dollars will be given if he is secured in any jail, so that the subscriber may get him again; and if brought home, reasonable charges will be paid, by

ROBERT GOOD
Living at Hope furnace

Dorian

great article. I've read some of the now archived letters written to US Presidents in the early part of the 20th century, by women, pleading for food, for their children, for help to find their brothers after WWI. The storylines of the lone letter writers goes on, thankfully. Thanks D for the head's up on what sounds like a book that will be an elucidating read

dr.e
