SB SF,
People in the U.S .do not reward losers. Dukakis, Mondale, Dole, did not get a third act after losing a run for the president. When historians look at candidates who came in second or third at conventions, they are the also rans of history. Hillary Clinton missed her chance at being president and will go down in history as being a lousy campaigner who could not manager her own campaign.

Any Republicans who would run in 2012 to lose to President Obama in a landslide is not fit to be president by definition.

Part of running for prez is getting your name out there. The more name recognition one has the better the chance of winning. Pawlenty can run in 2012, with no hope of winning, but it's part of a longer term process. His name will be out there, he'll get more backing as a serious candidate and when the right election comes along he'll be ready.

Why would any Republican want to run in 2012. Even in Obama was caught in bed with a young boy, we will win re-election. The next relevant election for the Democrats is the 2016 Iowa caucus and the next relevant election for the Repubicans will occur in 2020 since whoever succeeds Obama will not benefit from the love affair that the media has with President Obama.

It might include soon to be former Senator Coleman

I'm not so sure about this. The whole spectacle that his senate race has turned into just might have tanked his career altogether. Maybe the good folks of MN would welcome Jesse "the Body" back again.

I think its pretty clear what Pawlenty's future plans are now. I certainly do not know much about him, but I remember him getting quite a few looks as a moderate Repub running mate for McCain. But given how far away the next general election is, its nearly impossible to speculate. And, according to CNN, the "base" still seems to be in love with Huck, Palin, and Romney.
