The more name recognition one has the better the chance of winning. Pawlenty can run in 2012, with no hope of winning, but it's part of a longer term process. I certainly do not know much about him, but I remember him getting quite a few looks as a moderate Repub running mate for McCain. But given how far away the next general election is, its nearly impossible to speculate.
