I would agree with Mr. Klein's basic arguement that the Tiller murder was essentially political, and as such I suggest could also be considered assassination. Such indeed raises many important issues and dangers. Nonetheless, I cannot agree with the elitist implications of the quotation from Mr. AJ Strata. While I also have no time for the rants and rages of a murderer the likes of Roeder, Mr Strata's repeated litmus test of knowledge beyond that of high school biology to have an understanding of the issues surrounding abortion is just baffling. Lets be clear, Roeder is a murderer who's heinous act must be universally condemned. No ifs, ands, or buts. What that has to do with some minimum educational level or scientific knowledge required to understand or debate abortion issues is beyond me. I can only imagine that the majority of our good citizens have little or no scientific framework beyond high school biology, and are thus disqualified by the good Mr Strata from understanding or debating the issues surrounding abortion. I don't believe I am belaboring a trivial point here because it exposes Mr Strata's elitism (and, I am afraid to say, that of too many on the pro-choice side of the issue). The clear implication is that only the intellectual elite are worthy to argue and balance the difficult issues surrounding abortion, and anti-abortion activists are, by and large, uneducated Christian fundamentalists. It is a classic mistake to assume that those who don't agree with you are stupid. I wonder, in closure, how many Justices of the Supreme Court in 1973 had studied biology beyond their high school days, if at all?

Great post. And you're right about the political nature of the act. The pro-life movement is more about politics and punishing sexual sins than with saving fetuses.

Klein's article, and the Friedman piece he links to, are very short on specifics. Essentially all of the acts against abortion providers mentioned by both Klein and Friedman are already illegal. Do they want increased penalties or what exactly? I doubt legislation is going to deter fanatics.

I think there's a tendency after a tragedy to feel that something must be done in response. I don't agree with Klein's reasoning here, at least until he provides some specifics.

I should add that I am pro-choice, worked briefly at Planned Parenthood in Milwaukee, and have been present at several abortions although I did not assist in them.
