Nevada Senate Rejects Domestic Partnership Veto

Significantly:

The vote on Senate Bill 283 came following a dramatic speech by state Sen. Dennis Nolan, R-Las Vegas, who said he had received many vulgar and even threatening calls from people who demanded that he vote against the bill.

Those kinds of calls do not mesh with “the Christian beliefs I was brought up with,” Nolan said.

Emphasis mine. Via Towleroad.

On the eve of the Prop 8 decision, my son got a message on his cellphone “God Hates Fags!”

My first thought was if I was pro-gay and wanted to ramp up a sympathetic vote, I'd pose as a bigot and really spew the hate machine. Seems like it worked.

I hope I'm wrong, but the timing, the gut feeling tells me I'm not. This is an organized group adept at strategy.

If you were pro-gay and wanted a sympathetic vote you wouldn't need to pose as a bigot. There are enough of those already, and they are closer than you think.

It just didn't make sense. I made my son replay the message for me and the voice was vulgar, hoarse and harsh..not the christian singsong you'd expect.. and yet posing as christian. I've heard christians denounce homosexuals before but it's more of a pleading and benevolently-righteous. This message sounded….incongruous…odd…contrived is the only way I can put it. And timely too.

The opposition, if christian, knows that hate is not the best way to win their campaign. Spewing threats and so on would be counterproductive right on the eve of them likely getting what they wanted anyway…Little red flags always catch my attention. What can I say?

The enemies of marriage equality keep screaming about how marriage is being “redefined,” or even worse, “DESTROYED.” Nothing could be further from the truth.

For Straight (i.e. heterosexual) Americans, NOTHING about marriage is changing. The vast majority of human beings have always been and always will be Straight. They will continue to date, get engaged, marry and build lives and families together as they always have. None of that will change.

For Gay Americans, the only way that marriage is changing is that what was once off-limits is now starting to be allowed. In Massachusetts, Iowa, Vermont, and eventually the entire country, Gay couples are no longer being relegated to the fringes of society, but are being invited to a place at the table. You can quote Scripture all you want, but from a purely Constitutional standpoint there is simply no justification for denying Gay couples the exact same legal benefits and responsibilities that Straight couples have always taken for granted.

The issue of children is irrelevant, since one does not need a marriage license to make babies, nor is the desire or ability to make babies a prerequisite for obtaining a marriage license. Ask any couple why they wish to get married, and the answer will more likely be because they wish to make a solemn commitment, in the presence of friends and family members, to one another's support and happiness. Gay couples understand and support this.

Sil — hate seems to be working pretty well so far. That's how Prop 8 got passed in Cali. The “God hates fags” line was all over their signs, screaming their hate in big bold letters; I don't see why you'd be suspicious of people using that line in a phone message. Not all Christians have soft, melodious voices.
