A Colin Powell Counterattack on Cheney
Last Sunday’s sneer that he preferred Rush Limbaugh to Powell (“I didn’t know he was still a Republican”) has inspired a response to Dick Cheney from Lawrence Wilkerson, chief of staff for Colin Powell, when he was Secretary of State.
In a blog post to The Washington Note, Wilkerson reveals that, starting in 2002, the torture Cheney is now defending “was not aimed at preempting another terrorist attack on the U.S. but discovering a smoking gun linking Iraq and al Qaeda.”
In a full-bore counterattack, Powell’s former aide describes Cheney’s role in the demise of the party:
“He and Rush Limbaugh seem to be its leaders now. Lindsay Graham, John McCain, John Boehner, and all other Republicans of note seem to be either so enamored of Cheney-Limbaugh (or fearful of them?) or, on the other hand, so appalled by them, that the cat has their tongues. And meanwhile fewer Americans identify as Republicans than at any time since WWII. We’re at 21% and falling–right in line with the number of cranks, reprobates, and loonies in the country.

Good grief, another post about Dick Cheney. Look, for what its worth, can we just put this guy on trial and be done with him?
And I know its always newsworthy when someone slaps someone else in their own party, such as with Wilkerson here. But how can you then go on CNN and say with a straight face this:
“I couldn't walk into a courtroom and prove this to anybody, but I'm pretty sure it's fairly accurate”
In other words, Wilkinson is throwing some pretty heavy mud at Cheney, but he isn't confident that any of it is true. I say bring charges against the guy and be willing to faithfully prosecute him. But if you just want to run around and toss things out there you cannot prove, then you may just want to sit down and be quiet.
WHY IS LIMBAUGH GIVEN ANY CREDIBILITY? HE IS NOTHING BUT A PROPAGANDIST. HE PUTS DOWN THE MEDIA BUT TRY TO GET ON HIS SHOW IF YOU HAVE AN OPINION DIFFERENT FROM HIM. LIKE GOEBELS, HE PREACHES HATE AND, IF HE COULD, WOULD DO AWAY WITH ALL CONTRARY FOLKS.

The only people who are giving Limbaugh credibility are the Republicans. The Dems believe he's loony and are appalled that he represents the face of the Republican Party and that they are stuck dealing with him (at least indirectly). The Dems would love to have some reasonable Republicans in charge over there. But the Dems are stuck defending themselves from the likes of Limbaugh, who is nothing but a loud showman/entertainer with a huge following, so he has huge influence. And the other Republican leaders such as Steele take the cue from Limbaugh. Unfortunately that's what the Republicans want these days…. The GOP leadership thinks that's the only way they can keep attention on themselves… and draw some attention away from the Dems, who most Americans support at this point.
