Grey Poupon Brand Urges Obama To Issue “Dijon Gate” Pardons

27398b.jpgThe following is NOT a joke but a real email/press release from Kraft Food’s Grey Poupon team — a fun press release that is (smart) public relations at its best.

In case you’ve been on Mars, amid a recession, two wars, concerns over health care, etc. conservative talk show hosts and some Republicans have been making a big deal over the fact that President Barack Obama dared to put Grey Poupon mustard on his hamburger.

One irony in this “controversy.”
Why is it raised at all?

Republicans didn’t cut the mustard in the last election — and they have been “poupon-ing” independent voters for several years.

But no matter, here is the fun email and press release in full (we’ve left out contact information specifics):

PRESIDENT OBAMA URGED TO ISSUE “DIJON-GATE PARDONS” GLENVIEW, Ill./USA — May 8, 2009 —GREY POUPON has issued an open letter to
President Barack Obama urging him to grant “pardons” to all Americans who have ever been criticized for their love of Dijon mustard.

“We believe that all Americans should have the option to exercise their freedom of taste,” said Christie Crouch, brand manager for GREY POUPON. “When we learned that President Obama was criticized for ordering a hamburger with Dijon mustard — now known as ‘Dijon-gate’ — we decided to take a stand by urging the President to issue ‘Pardon Me For Loving Dijon’ proclamations in support of condiment lovers everywhere.”

A copy of the letter appears below and can be viewed at www.greypouponpardon.com, where classic GREY POUPON “Pardon Me” television commercials can also be seen.

May 8, 2009
The Honorable Barack H. Obama
President of the United States
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW
Washington, DC 20006
Dear Mr. President:

We applaud you, Mr. President, for exercising your freedom of taste when recently ordering a burger with Dijon mustard. We’re always happy to see people use Dijon mustard to add flair and flavor to their favorite foods. The right to choose condiments freely is quintessentially American and embodies the spirit of our democracy.

So we urge you to respond to “Dijon-gate” by issuing a “pardon” to any American who has ever been criticized for putting a liberal spread of Dijon mustard on a burger or a conservative dollop on a ham & cheese sandwich. These “Pardon Me for Loving Dijon” proclamations will empower the millions of Dijon mustard-loving Americans to ask for their favorite condiment with pride.

Respectfully yours,
The GREY POUPON Team

    Clever, very clever!

Meanwhile Kraft is poisoning anyone who eats their toxin laden factory farmed food.

“Many Kraft products contain virtually unregulated and untested genetically engineered ingredients which pose risks to our health and the environment. Mounting scientific evidence suggests that GE foods may cause hazards such as new allergic reactions, new toxins in food, and the use of more dangerous pesticides.”

Virtually anything Kraft sells in America contains MSGs.

Not only is MSG scientifically proven to cause obesity, brain damage and thinner retinas, it is an addictive substance!

Kraft's High Frucose Corn Syrup, a toxin in it's own right also contains mercury!

If Grey Poupon is owned by Kraft, why does Kraft use the “power of the purse” and cancel all advertising on Fox News, if Fox thinks the use of GP on a hamburger is such a sacrilege.

  4. skybar says:

Oh, please … Yeah, right, Kraft is killing us. If they were, I'd be dead.

  5. I think the issue here is the issue raised in the post. This is so typical of what happens with weblogs. Everything becomes a big, serious, angry debate. I mean REALLY. And I don’t care what is quoted about Kraft, the bottom line is that millions of Americans use their products and others and aren’t dead. I am personally allergic to MSG and there are some products I can’t eat because I bloat up. I have never had trouble with Kraft products but there are one or two restaurants where if I eat there I can feel myself “expand.” I’m not going to let this comment thread deteriorate into a long angry rant against Kraft that crosses the kind of line that we don’t allow (or try not to allow when we see it) in comments when aimed at writer or commenter. This press release was fun to read. PS I have used Grey Poupon in a salad dressing I make and in my recipe for roast beef for many many years.

Unless this is a ghost writing this comment, I haven’t died. How many years has Kraft been in business?

    Can’t there be any posts on a blog that don’t end in the same angry tone? Now…you all made your point and “vented.” Comments about the press release, if it’s good or bad pr, clever or not clever are welcome but let’s keep it to the actual issue of the post. They had fun with this controversy.;

    I absolutely love it, thanks!
