Anyone who could read the census knew that the Republicans were going to eventually be in severe trouble.

What the writer ignored is how easier it is for the big government party to be the big tent party. As long as each group gets its piece of the government pie, they are willing to tolerate other parts of the Democratic Party. Suburban New England Whites are willing to tolerate separate and unequal race based programs demanded by the CBC because they believes they will not be affected and they get college funding or maybe free healthcare as payment.

PLEASE, sir. The Republicans have done the same thing. For the last 20 years or so the far-right, a.k.a. Religious Right, has been willing to tolerate the moderates of the party while those moderates have tolerated the Religious Right.

    Rambie,

The Democrats have always been able to be the big tent party because they have always been able to throw enough money around to pay off their different groups. The differences between moderate middle class whites and social conservative middle class whites is small compared to the differences between inner city blacks and upper class suburban whites. The Democrats hold the groups together by throwing money at every problem.

If a party is going to talk about cutting government spending and making people more responsible for their own actions, they are going to be the smaller tent party. Look at how everyone admits that the only way that Republicans can ever appeal to blacks or Hispanics is to blatantly pander to them.
