This was responsible for much of the GOP's losses in 2006 and 2008.<br><br>This is not to say that Democrats face the same fate. They have a more charismatic and competent leader, who has high levels of support from moderates. The Democrats are not perceived as a party of extremism, as the Republicans were. Moderates are welcome and have a seat at the table. This is why the Democrats should be flying high for a while. If the GOP utterly collapses, though, nature abhors a vacuum. The Democrats could split into two parties, relegating the GOP to the dustbin of history along with the Whigs.
