		<description>It should be pointed out that Republicans also had an unquestioned (if not charismatic) leader, as well as party discipline, for the past eight years. This was responsible for much of the GOP&#039;s losses in 2006 and 2008.&lt;br&gt;&lt;br&gt;This is not to say that Democrats face the same fate. They have a more charismatic and competent leader, who has high levels of support from moderates. The Democrats are not perceived as a party of extremism, as the Republicans were. Moderates are welcome and have a seat at the table. This is why the Democrats should be flying high for a while. If the GOP utterly collapses, though, nature abhors a vacuum. The Democrats could split into two parties, relegating the GOP to the dustbin of history along with the Whigs.</description>
