Newsweek has an interesting article about the need to get the military out of politics in Pakistan. As the article details, the army has not done much good and has actually caused a great deal of instability in the government.
Meanwhile there are growing concerns about a possible Taliban takeover in the increasingly unstable country.
President Obama is worried about a possible collapse of the government.
From what I’ve seen out of the various ‘experts’ on the region there is not much danger of actual nuclear weapons falling into Taliban control due to strong security procedures but the country does have a large stockpile of nuclear material that could be at risk
I am increasingly wondering if the entire region needs a new strategy.
Yes, the exit stragey.
Here's a little tidbit that came my way about the real reason we may be in the region: British Imperialism.
That's what I said.
It was brought to my attention by what I consider an excellent source, that Britain is not a little bit behind the push for the US to stay in Af/Pak.
It was explained to me that although Britain has released ties to India “officially”, that they still consider it, resource-wise “theirs” and therefore any threat to it, a threat to them. And hence our government's involvement because they seem to have the same attitude about the US, ie: officially we won our independance, unofficially we must always fight for the crown..
If this is the case, I for one am not going to wear a red coat and die on behalf of Britains lingering economic interests in India..fer crissakes.
Here's a link that helps illuminate the situation: http://blogs.reuters.com/pakistan/2009/01/29/br…
Meanwhile, don't let me stop you beating the “FEAR FEAR FEAR” drum. At the very least it's taking up space on this website that would otherwise be devoted to probes on Cheneyco torture and links to nefarious activites once wholly ascribed to “Al Qaida”.
That is one serious reach S.
America's involvement in the middle east has always been about one thing, our own interests.
Westerners have been working on a middle east strategy for over a thousand years. At some point in time we will have to let these people work it all out for themselves. They don't need our help and most don't want it.
