‘Deliver Me, O My Lord, from My Friends’ [the Americans]: L’Orient Le Jour, Lebanon

”Iran’s regional cards: Syria, the Muslim Brotherhood, Hezbullah and Hamas.”

Israel isn’t the only U.S. ally in the Middle East expressing concern about the policies of the Obama Administration. According to this editorial from Lebanon’s L’Orient Le Jour, The pro-West ruling faction in Lebanon is worried as well – given the peace overtures being sent out in the direction of Syria and Iran and the far-right Israeli government of Binyamin Netanyahu.

Emile Khoury of Lebanon’s L’Orient Le Jour writes in part:

“How is Obama going to handle the issue of the Middle East – powder keg of the world? As the weakest link in the chain, Lebanon is concerned, afraid of falling victim once again, to any bazaar [they are afraid of getting sold behind closed doors]. Deliver me, o my Lord, from my friends; I can take care of my enemies. Never has this saying applied better than to Americans, now represented by Obama.”

Because, to begin with, the new American president proposes opening a dialogue with the Iranians as well as the Syrians. This ordinarily results in haggling with just the veneer of attractive offers.
