It has always interested me how the liberal media talks about the political parties. both parties consist of moderate members and extreme members. yet they always describe the democrats as moderate and of the people, and the republicans are described by their extreme right wing parts of the party. As an independent I have finally made the descision to register as a republican to bloster the party with my moderate views. The media which is extremely opartisan no longer can be called newsmedia. defining Obama as anything but a left wing democrat is an abuse of anyone's journalistic license. read teddy roosevelt and his opinion of people blindly follow a leader as unpatriotic and you will define the current democrats (the entire party), the right wing republicans in the last 8 years. But the moderate republicans have consistantly been at odds with Bush. why are the moderate democrats blindly following this extreme left wing president. It is simply unpatriotic.

"The American people do not care which Party solves the problems confronting our nation." ~ Arlen Specter

Exactly. This is the time to get to work on the huge challenges facing America, not the time for anti-this, anti-that, and anti-the other thing. Clearly Arlen Specter sees this. It's equally clear that Michael Steele does not.

"typical of 21st century American politics — by issuing a blistering statement that seeks to discredit Specter, obscuring the larger issue of moderates and whether the GOP will be a big tent or a small tent. His statement is symptomatic of the party’s problem with those who are not conservatives"

More of the twilight zone; I seem to remember these same sentiments toward Lieberman when he decided to leave the Dems:

http://www.memeorandum.com/060809/h1610

Specter now is going through the same thing, no?

This makes the assumption that he will win that election. His language, if you read carefully, could be the equivalent, "I did some research and I'm gonna lose as a Repub."

"I deeply regret that I will be disappointing many friends and supporters."

Well, here he's referring to his Republican friends and supporters. He also has lots of independant and Democratic friends and supporters. And it's great that Specter is willing to vote for what he believes in, rather than toe any party line.
