The idea, as stated by some of the posters, that any dissent to President Obama equates to racism is just about as close minded as one can get.

Support for Obama among blacks is not the same thing as dislike of whites. Reverse discrimination would imply the latter.

Nah, that couldn't be it. It must be that black people uniformly all believe in the same exact political ideas.

Thank god someone is finally calling out those Uncle Toms who didn’t support Obama. As you said, it’s just unimaginable for an African American to not line up behind Barack regardless of his positions on the issues.

The courage you’ve shown while attending Harvard in the face of rampant racism is an inspiration to us all.

• You and Barack, walking proudly from class to class through the gauntlet of hooded Klan Harvard students.
• Righteously ignoring the looks from racists who thought it unfair to lower the academic standards to admit you.
• Suffering the nastiness of emails from others who thought you to be “uppity”.

One cannot help but admire victims such as you and Barack. How you continue on from day to day is a monument to personal perseverance.

Let’s all hope that one day, people of color may be able to study in our educational system, drink from the same water fountains and perhaps even run for elected office as equals.

I think President Obama has so much support from African-Americans mainly because he is formidable. We know he somehow overcame the barriers that usually thwart us. In fact, he and I were law students at the same time. I remember the talk about white conservatives harassing him in an effort to block his ascendancy to leadership of the Harvard Law Review. Racists at other law schools were being encouraged to send him nasty messages in a coordinated effort to 'put him in his place.' Mutual suffering does not invariably bind people together, but in this instance it has.

There is also pride in the Obamas showing the world how smart, attractive and personable black people can be. We spend so much of our lives being demeaned that having people all over the world acknowledge the wonderful qualities of an African-American family is a balm to our broken hearts. Methinks even some black conservatives are acknowledging that.

I guess Obama's near perfect approval among African-Americas must be a perfect storm of circumstances…. There aren't too many blacks in the GOP and I think they tend to be more moderate. The Obamas are a perfect American Dream family which most blacks (and whites) aspire to achieve: devotion between Barack and Michelle, two perfectly polite girls, a dog, a white house with a picket fence, of sorts Michelle and Barack made it on their own through hard work, education and sacrifice. They may have had the support of a strong family, but neither had families with connections, political, social, business, etc. They both have a strong Christian faith. And they (both Barack and Michelle) beat the Democratic machine lined up behind Hillary and then the Republican machine.

It's really just a dream family that all Americans should be proud of- even the wealthy should be proud of what hard work can accomplish in America for the disadvantaged (and both Barack and Michelle were disadvantaged, if for no other reason than their race).

Besides Obama is letting his mother-in-law live with them.

Part of Obama's support from the black community is racial pride, part of it is the Obama's personal qualities and part of it is the hope and pride African-Americans feel. I remember many African-Americans (most, if not all of whom experience racism and hatred) never thought that a white America would elect Obama. To see a black person being supported by much of white America, and much of the world, must be very uplifting to them personally. I would guess that African-Americans now feel that they are no longer second class citizens like so many racist people treat them. Not only do many African-Americans feel personal pride, but they also feel pride in their country to see whites (and other races) support Obama. The question as to whether white America is ready to elect a black president has been resoundingly answered.

I think it's just a perfect storm of events and circumstances.

African-Americans probably feel joyous on so many levels. Not that racial problems will be solved overnight with just the election of Obama, but outside of being given the right to vote, this is the ultimate Civil Rights stride (or leap).
