I don't know if Boyle can become a great entertainment star both for physical reasons and her undeniable social awkwardness, but I heard a tape of her doing the old Julie London classic, Cry Me a River, and thought it quite excellent. I think she could sell many thousands of albums if they can get the right material to her. I liked hearing this other track (that she did for her church a decade ago or something similar) because it was only about making good music and not about all the social issues in this video above.

Well, I would expect Cowell knew what was coming. He runs a tight ship...and knows how to act his piece.
He plays a splendid benevolent villain.

Ant and Dec, for example, really weren't surprised at all. If they knew...doubtless from auditions/tapes...then Cowell knew.
I suspect Amanda and Piers are not given a heads up, to preserve some drama.

That said, this is a great clip.
Look for the full video...with the images of derision and mockery on the faces of women in the audience before Boyle began to sing.

The British media have run through several cycles of Boyle now: ...from popular sensation...to what does the audience reaction say about us...to criticism of her performance...to outrage at Boyle's recent makeover etc.
Oprah was late on the similar Paul Potts story, but has jumped on this one.

Perhaps Boylemania will flame out. "South Park" tore into Boylemania...although the degree to which "South Park" is a bell-weather of cultural opinion is a matter of debate.

But a great clip and a great moment.

What it says about the audience -- us -- is something else....

Ant and Dec, for example, really weren't surprised at all. If they knew…doubtless from auditions/tapes…then Cowell knew.
I suspect Amanda and Piers are not given a heads up, to preserve some drama.

That said, this is a great clip.
Look for the full video…with the images of derision and mockery on the faces of women in the audience before Boyle began to sing.

The British media have run through several cycles of Boyle now: …from popular sensation…to what does the audience reaction say about us…to criticism of her performance…to outrage at Boyle's recent makeover etc.
Oprah was late on the similar Paul Potts story, but has jumped on this one.

Perhaps Boylemania will flame out. “South Park” tore into Boylemania…although the degree to which “South Park” is a bell-weather of cultural opinion is a matter of debate.

But a great clip and a great moment.

What it says about the audience — us — is something else….

That is amazing. I had not heard her sing before. That is like the ultimate moment in a Hollywood movie from Louis B. Mayer's day. I've never seen anything so dramatic.

Next to her voice, what stuns me most is her poise -- her dignity and self-assurance. The look on Cowell's face made my entire week. :-)
