Oh no... poor CIA interrogators might be reluctant to torture their prisoners. What's the world coming to?

SD, I WANT a culture in which people are hesitant to do reprehensible, subhuman, indecent and illegal things. Don't you? Remember, we executed Japanese soldiers for waterboarding American soldiers. Of COURSE I expect us to treat our prisoners the way we expect ours to be treated.

"And I say, “Well, it’s authorized by the president. The attorney general says it’s lawful. And it’s been briefed to Congress.” That agency officer’s going to say, “Yeah, I know, but I see what’s going on here now. Have you run it by the ACLU? "

It is not the release of the memos that have created this situation. Fact is, no president can authorise torture (it is against the law). And so, no AG can sign off on such an authorisation (it is not in his power to change the law). This is why so many within the Bush administration and the itelligence community warned against the creation of these memos and questioned the reasoning behind them. They were bogus, which is the reason Philip Zelikow wrote is own dissenting memo, and why the administration destroyed it.

The CIA's problem is not Obama, its that they were led for so long by people like Hayden.

Creating a culture where people are hesitate to do anything for fear of being second guessed is not a flaw of the Obama policy, it is a feature. The people staffing the White House have hated the CIA for decades. Creating a policy where little is anything can be done is part of the plan.
