It's a shame that people have really bought into the Chavez-as-the-devil horseshit, because he's not. If you get past the right-wing bullshit, Chavez is a guy trying to pull his countrymen out of grinding poverty, and the people bitching the most about him have a vested interest in putting their boots back on the necks of the poor in his country.

[...] News Sources wrote an interesting post today onHere’s a quick excerptThe big controversy today raging in the old and news media was President Obama’s handshake with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez. It set off a major brou-ha-ha typical of modern politics: expressions of (what else?) outrage (the most prevalent form of 21st century politics, which is seemingly displacing perspective) from politicos and some bloggers. A charge is made then is repeated and repeated and repeated in several media (new and old…print, cyberspace and broadcast) until it (those wh [...]

I was going to write on this but since you beat me to it I will comment here. I think the blowup over the 'handshake' is much ado over nothing.

Obama was standing there and Chavez walked up and offered his hand. Obama had three choices.

1. Ignore him

2. Shake his hand and be polite

3. Shake his hand and be really happy about it.

He chose option #2 which is the right choice. Turning his back on the handshake would have been childish and shallow. By making it clear with his body language that the handshake was not 'I'm thrilled to see you' as much as 'I will grin and bear it because I'm polite' I think he took the right tack.
