Last year I read a college text history of South America, wanting in my retirement to know something about our new world neighbors. What I read horrified me--not just the Spanish and the Indians, not just the European imperialism--but what I learned about the actions our own nation has taken to oppress Latin America. Then I read A Century of Solitude. Then I began to read Isabel Allende. I recalled that back when Castro took over Cuba, many Americans were puzzled as to why our government did not see him as a welcome change from Batista, whose disgusting, mob ruled administration had been widely criticized in the press.

I have just ordered the book Chavez gave to Obama. In my opinion, we will need to be in solidarity with Latin America as old world nations begin to organize and realign themselves without us as the center.
