According to SecDef nominee Gates himself (when questioned in his Senate confirmation hearings), our nation's intel institutions have failed miserably and repeatedly to predict the nature and/or timing of future wars, so then why does the Presdent feel so confident that Gates can suddenly do so now with perfect claravoyance?

As the CSAF indicated yesterday, in attempting to clarify the confusing WP Op-Ed you cite, the USAF military requirement (assuming moderate risk) is for 243 F-22A, not 187. Did you hear that, Mr Gates? CSAF Schwartz said "The military requirement is 243", so go threaten somebody else in uniform who is willing to lie under oath because this new CSAF apparently will not. Neither were the last 5 CSAFs, the last of whom you falsely accused and fired for bogus reasons. But I digress..

Now it is up to the Congress and their singular Constitutional authority to arm and equip our nation's armed forces.

The F-22A is $142M Flyaway cost compared to the F-35A at $80M (Flyaway). For the extra money, the F-22A performs the Air Superiority mission 10 times better than the multi-role F-35A/B/C. That may not matter much now to those who read every book on counter-insurgency so they can sound smart on the Sunday talk shows, but it will sure as Hell matter a lot 10-20 years after the F-22 line is long shuttered and gone. SecDef Gates needs to pay NOW for the Air Superiority forces that our Joint Combat Forces require for the next 30 years. Where will we use something like the F-22?.. try North Korea, Iran, defending our Pacific friends from China and our European friends from Putin's Russia.

60 more F-22s are 1000 times, if not 10,000 times cheaper than losing a conventional war--that war that SecDef Gates swears we'll never have to fight again.
