AR, I think so too. But you know the expression about how people should never talk about religion and politics... sometimes there will be respect, but sometimes (at least I do) I do get carried away. Hopefully not too much but there are some flash point issues which I may not always be reasonable on or make the most sense in my rantings. A few times I've wished that I could go back and delete my comments so I don't come off like the idiot I sometimes am. :)

SB - thanks for the kind words. We have been on the opposite sides of issues a lot, given our different viewpoints, but most of our interchanges have been respectful and educational.

I have no sympathy Amar Bose, it's not surprising his right wing wack job compatriots turned on him. His company is one of those that have moved virtually all of their manufacturing to China, and they've even started moving other parts of the company to India. (Bose just laid off 1000, despite record profits).

Amar Bose has been preaching his ultra-conservative mantra to his employees while systematically weeding out the lefties. Working at Bose is like working for the HUAC in 1950.

Amar Bose has become a billionaire by shafting Americans and hosing their jobs. Changing his name to "Amar Smith" won't make him a lick better.

Austin, I like Texans and I like the fact that they speak their mind. But when it comes to hypocrisy or trying to tell other people what is good for that other person, then that's what gets me going (and not just Texans, everyone). There are times when being who we are is harder than it should be, but it shouldn't be specific to Texans. I have no problem with people who may look me in the face and say "I don't like gays, but what you do is your business." (Assuming they don't want to change me or convert me.) While I do have issues with people who say, "I don't have a problem with gays." Only to find out later that they do.... they just couldn't be honest about it.

I don't have a problem with Rick Warren being against homosexuals... but once he and his followers start meddling in the lives of people he has never met then all gloves are off. The same is true of any politician who interferes in the lives of others simply because he or she doesn't like that other person (or group of people). I don't meddle in others' lives (at least I try to stay out) and I want others to stay out of mine.

Obviously the post isn't about homosexuals, but part of it is about speaking one's mind. And that's what my examples are meant to address. It's one thing to understand what doesn't work for you personally, but it's another thing to try to change people to get them to be like you. And while Betty Boop may be an elected official, she is supposed to represent the people in her district to the best of her ability and that includes refraining from any racist (towards Asians) comments. It's admirable that she wants her constituents to be better educated, yet when presented with an opportunity to be an elected leader who sets a good example and good tone she fails. She probably doesn't realize that her own words undermine the family values she supports.

So while Betty Boop did speak her mind she did so in a demeaning and hypocritical way, which isn't being true to the ideals she claims she supports. That's why I don't like her.

At any rate, most of that wasn't directed at you.... I may not always agree with your comments but I do think they're honest, at least most of the time :) and that's what counts. It isn't always about being right and someone else is wrong... sometimes it just about sharing perspectives. I've probably gotten more from your comment than you could imagine.

From her website:

http://www.house.state.tx.us/members/dist4/brow...

"Concern for her grandchildren was one of the primary reasons Representative Brown decided to run for State Representative. She wants all the children of Texas to have the opportunity to gain a quality education in a safe environment. Betty also wants our children to inherit a Texas where business is free from unnecessary government interference and where those who are willing to work hard will have the opportunity to succeed. She wants to help those individuals who are truly in need in a way that encourages self-reliance and independence while, at the same time, seeing that those individuals who can't help themselves can access the help they need.

Life experience has served to re-enforce Betty's belief in the importance of family. She believes any legislation that is good for Texas families is good for Texas."

So let me get this straight.... she believes in "quality education" so people can be self-reliant. And she believes in the importance of family so much that whatever "...is good for families is good for Texas." And she does not believe in government interference.

Yet she as a government representative is advocating that a group of people whose names are not "American" suppress their heritage (which subordinates their families) and change their names to help uneducated Americans deal with them.

This is just another version of the "us v. them" mentality that many Republicans believe and feel justified in doing so since Bush as president made such odious behavior acceptable.

She mentioned in the article that she has heard that Chinese is a hard language to learn.... I didn't realize that anyone suggested that Americans learn Chinese so I don't see the point of bringing this up in her argument.

Since some people have problems with pronouncing the "r" I think she should lead by example so her name is easier to pronounce by more people. I think Betty Boop would be the best name, which also rhymes with what she's full of.

She gets to kill two birds with one stone: lead by example by adopting a name more people can pronounce and choosing a name that's more descriptive of herself.

Yes! Go GOP. Having alienated Blacks and Hispanics, now they go after Asian Americans too, like these:

Eric Shinseki, fashion designer Vera Wang, founder of Wang Laboratories An Wang , Amar Bose, founder the Bose Corporation, Jen-Hsun Huang, co-founder of NVIDIA, Jerry Yang, co-founder of Yahoo! Andrea Jung, Chairman and CEO of Avon, Vinod Khosla, founding CEO of Sun Microsystems, Steve Chen and Jawed Karim, co-creators of YouTube.

Anyone unable to pronounce these names? What a buffoon Betty Braun is. Oh sorry, Brown. Next she'll be going after our mayor Hickenlooper, not to mention Zbigniew Brezhinski. In fact, the GOP should consist only of those named White, Brown (just for Betty, though the party doesn't really like the color),Smith and Jones.

Only if Betty Brown asks non-Asians with names like Billy Joe Jim Bob to change their names to only 1 name so that someone dealing with the person doesn't have so many names to remember. /snark

Good grief!
