The problem with moderates is that when the right-wing decided to impeach Clinton they went along with the program, when Bush decided to invade Iraq, they stood there and went along with the program, when Bush decided to use the constitution to wipe his ass, they stood there and went along with the program.

When the right-wing ran the show in DC, the moderates went along for the ride, but now that the right-wing isn't running the show they have a problem, to which I can only say FU.

Where were you when you were needed? Oh Yeah, kissing right-wing ass.

Hunh. I think you're absolutely right, Scott.

Even right here on this site, I've seen the terms "moderate" and "centrist" conflated, when I don't see them as being the same thing at all. (though I don't know that I'd pin the tail solely on the backside of Bill Clinton).

I agree that moderates have allowed themselves to be "branded" in an unflattering way... much as the term "liberal" has become a sneer from a conservative, and "the right" has taken on the baggage of the Religious Right. Even moderates within the parties themselves (as opposed to indies like me) have been on the receiving end of the malignant slurs. (RINO comes to mind.)

So how does one go about re-framing?
