PJx, I've long held the opinion that a third party is called for. The general response, though, to such thinking is along the lines of either a) there is already a third party (the Green Party, the Libertarian Party, the Pick Your Favorite and Insert Here Party), or b) the 2-party system is going to stay as it is, and the ousted group (currently the GOP) will change and absorb and meet the new political need that will arise.

My personal opinion is that inertia is a powerful force, and there's no real will to expend the level of effort required to make such a change (to introduce a viable third party to American politics).

Personally, I'd like to see a viable Moderate party of some kind, but as Joe wrote above, there is no monolithic vision of "moderate", any more than there is "liberal" or "conservative". However, we cannot go indefinitely with single-party rule -- and although we can certainly survive (and even thrive) with it temporarily, the GOP is going to *have* to stop cannibalizing itself and move forward.

I'm still trying to determine if this was supposed to be a moderate article. I trust we can all agree Leonard Pitts contribution is shall we say from the Left point of view. The beauty of creating a strawman embellished with all sorts of socially repugnant attibutes is how nice it makes the creator feel about himself and his superiority over "them". The creator has relegated me to that of a bigoted, racist, homophobe knowing nothing more about me than that I am a white male living in Tennessee. This is apparently acceptable because the "them" is a white male living in the South. Any other demographic group characterized in this fashion would be crying from the hiltops with the support from everywhere. If the white male takes exception he is brushed aside as the angry white man. Meanwhile I am supposed to listen to the likes of Chris Matthews explain to me the "Hardball" issues of the day. Another Moderate voice. Talk about 1984.

"Our 2-party system desperately needs the GOP to pull its collective act together."

What about a 3-party system?

The GOP becomes a regional party, the South and Utah, Wyoming and so on, still winning seats in Senate and the House. But in the West, the North East, the North and so on, a new conservative/libertarian party will form, also winning seats.

Doubt that would work very long (a major party would want to have a shot a the Presidency), but I wouldn't be surprised to see it happen. But in the end there needs to be one responsible conservative party.

"...the GOP faces a real possibility of being reduced to a regional party of limited national relevance..."

Interestingly, Joe, I was struck by a similar analysis yesterday:

"Limbaugh is a dominant figure because the Grand Old Party is no longer a political party in the usual American sense. It is an ideological faction."

Link

Our 2-party system desperately needs the GOP to pull its collective act together.

"Today will it be Rush versus McCain?"

It has been Rush vs. McCain for several years now.

Most recently, during the early days of the 2007-2008 presidential campaign, when Rush ravaged McCain---and continued even into the elections.

But, even worse and more dastardly, during the 2000 Bush-McCain primaries, when Rush made despicable comments about the POW McCain and other disgusting implications (in his own inimitable deniable way) about his personal life . And, I don't even like McCain poltically, but respect his heroic service to our country and his personal values.

But nothing is sacred to this GOP narcissist hero, when it comes to him being right "99.98 percent of the time," or when anyone else dares to challenge him
