The Importance of Feb. 28, 2009

This Saturday has been globally designated “Rare Disease Day.”

The purpose: “to call attention to the public health issues associated with rare diseases, which affect nearly 30 million Americans and countless others around the world.”

My son is one of those 30 million Americans, as is the youngest daughter of a friend and former colleague. You might be surprised to learn which diseases are considered rare, and who you know that fits into this category.

From our family to yours: Please take a moment Saturday (or sooner) to become more familiar with this special category of diseases — and if you’re so inclined, make a donation, no matter how small, to NORD, the National Organization for Rare Disorders.

Thanks.

PS — Way back in 1983, those suffering from rare disorders benefited from what is often discussed but rarely seen today: bipartisan cooperation.

February 28th 2009 is important to me because it is the 6th anniversary (on the Gregorian calendar) of the death of my beloved father from metastasized lung cancer:

    Eric R. Robinson DDS (Dad)
    February 28, 2003 (Gregorian)
    Adar 26, 5763 (Jewish)
  • Thanks for alerting me to this important day. My son has Eosinophilic Esophagitis, which is included in the list of rare diseases. I would not have known it two years ago, but it's clear to me now that those with rare diseases face the double-challenge of not only living with a chronic (or worse, fatal) disease, but struggling to increase understanding and research interest.
