Vista Has Been A Problem Throughout History

Last month TMV launched a “bailout” (fundraiser) to try and raise $900 to cover some needed tech work and contribute to less than half the cost of a laptop, since much of what I write on this site is done via laptop while I travel and my five-year-old Dell was dying. The fundraiser has only raised a small part of what was needed (so it’ll resume Monday and be extended for a few more weeks in March) but I had to buy the laptop anyway. This new one is an HP that was on sale at Best Buy…but it had Vista.

I have seen Vista and know people who have it — and with the exception of one teen who likes it, most can’t stand it and two techs I know say to stay away from it. So I took the computer from the store — carton unopened — and gave it to my techs to convert it from Vista.

Is Vista that bad? Apparently yes although some contend it is misunderstood. Here’s a video that shows how Vista has been a problem throughout history (WARNING: this rare, historical footage contains some adult language that we do not normally run on TMV):

I don't know, I'm running Vista right now, and I'm not having too many troubles. My roommate also runs Vista, and I know several other people who run Vista. I wonder if at least part of it is “be careful what you wish for”. People have complained a lot in the past about security issues with Microsoft products (duh, it's the biggest OS in the country, maybe the world, of course people will target it more than Apple), so Microsoft decided to increase security measures, so now everyone complains that it's annoying. Maybe their business philosophy is “Let them hate as long as they buy.”

Vista isn't as bad as many complain, but it does take alot of work to get around the security and restore BS. Much of it is cheap copies of Linux and Apple OS. If your HD is big enough consider a dual boot config with Ubuntu or Fedora.

I dual boot Vista and Fedora. Vista does require some tweaking to run right. Mine has been stable and smooth.

as a techie, allow me to say, that not since that abomination millenium, has there been a worse built platform.

it may be fine for most home users, but it is the biggest pain to configure for office and network use

and it too has security holes, which is why microsoft rolled out a huge, untested patch, that did more harm than good

    Joe, great video- thanks!

I am much happier with my Macs than with my previous PCs.
