Of course, it's too early to tell whether Obama or his policies will be successful. At the same time, it is entirely appropriate to wonder aloud whether he's on the right track.

After all, Obama is saying daily that we are in an "unprecendented" fix that requires new, bold and sweeping solutions. One would have to be brain dead (or a very foolish yes man) not to have an opinion of one's own about whether his bold, sweeping solutions are the best.

If tihe times were more tranquil, we'd have a more convivial winter and spring politically. But they are not, so we are not. In the past, there have been some rough arguments over spending or taxing or not taxing a few billions here or there. When people are grappling with proposed expenditures in the trillions, why would we expect less contention?

If Obama's actions turn out to work reasonably well, he'll be feted. If not, he will bear the burden of responsibility for choosing one way rather than another. he -- and we -- cannot have it any other way.

http://thepurplecenter.blogspot.com/

Hopefully, I just turned off the italics HTML tag.

I don't really have much to say about the substance of this post.

The President is just working the bully pulpit.

He's supposed to do that.

Obama said "this will help," not this will fix, cure, resolve, or any other absolute. He's right, and accurate. The Stim will help, so will a resolution to the credit problem, so will putting regulations in place that saves Wall Street from its own blind avarice.. If he can somehow solve all three of these problems, we still face a world market equally broken.

I disagree that "its too soon to tell". He's had exactly one month in office; and in that time, he's tackled this economic hydra in a reasoned, pragmatic way despite the political parlor games of BOTH parties. He's asked for ideas and solutions from ANYBODY who thinks they can contribute.

It's time to fish or cut bait.

" any criticism of him in this regard has to be leveled just as directly at republican talk radio and all the Malkinesque pundits"

I would hold the president to a higher standard than a bunch of partisan entertainers. Anyway I agree that's it's too early to tell and it's all just conjecture.

I abhor the gap between rhetoric and reality as much as anyone, and the last thing I want to see is Obama slipping into that gap, but any criticism of him in this regard has to be leveled just as directly at republican talk radio as well as all the Malkinesque pundits who have been crying foul and failure even before things have had a chance to work. If my memory serves me correctly Obama has been accused to too much doom and gloom in earlier speeches, so there is a certain damned if you do and damned if you don't dynamic at work. For my own part, I'm willing to be a little more patient than the "professionals".
