The first person to devise a shunt from other sources of waste household heat to the family dryer wins the patent, maybe a Nobel prize and a lot of respect from yours truly!

We have an old gas dryer that my son and I bought specifically to mess around with. But truth be told we're too busy staying afloat to devote the time we need. Heat exchangers of course would be the way to start. And the family needs to be smart in that when the heat source comes on, that time of day is the time to dry clothes. Some of those household central heating systems are so arid that I'd be very surprised they wouldn't suck the moisture right out of clothes as the air is draw through those little holes in the back and out the filter/ducting. My sinuses sure crack and bleed when I visit the old folks place…lol..

The heat isn't quite as hot in the home heater, but maybe it is closer to the burner? In any event the dryer could merely be left to tumble for a longer period of time at lower heat. The tumbler isn't what sucks the juice nearly as much as the heat source. This one innovation alone could save our country hugely in energy woes.
