Symbols Valued Over Substance (Guest Voice)

Wells Fargo canceled an expensive shindig for its executives, said shindig a PR no-no now that the bank is receiving TARP funds. Dudgeon and the financial dragon

It’s rather sad, actually, that Campbell Brown may successfully stoke the populist fires as she excoriates Wells Fargo for a) initially planning to hold employee junkets while receiving TARP funds and b) attacking the media for criticizing all “employee appreciation events.”

There’s a good reason for it…

as an employee I can tell you that this is NOT a shindig for executives. This is an appreciation event for employees. The people awarded this trip are front line employees, tellers, bankers, processors, etc. It is understood that in these economic times companies do need to rethink this sort of thing, but the media needs to be fair and just in the reporting of it. To make this sound like it is a party for the executives of the bank is simply untrue. It is a 20 year annual event that recognizes team members for a job well done. Some of these team members are making $20K per year or less. Regardless of if these trips should be happening or if it is a good use of money aside, let's get it right in the media. Why try and taint this for what it is not? It is not another case of the fat cats of the bank going out to party on borrowed money. This trip was paid for with profits made by hard working people. Again I don't have any issue with the fact that the trip has been axed, I have issue with the media painting this picture for what it is not!!! At least get it right.
