I agree with Jim- he ran for Senator here in our state, and tried to fool a lot of people into thinking that he's a moderate--- but that's far from the truth.

He was recruited for the race by Karl Rove- which didn't sit well with Marylanders who despised the Bush administration. Steele is a smooth-talker but beneath the surface he is the same old same old. His nearest opponent in the RNC contest did not win because he had a history of membership in a whites-only country club in the South. A chairman with that pedigree could hardly expand the GOP's base!

It wouldn't take an extremely liberal Democrat to recognize that Steele is just more of the same. While he's not from the Bible Belt he has bought completely into the Republican support for the social conservatives. He's no different than anyone else in the current Republican leadership except in the tone of his skin. Tone of rhetoric is the same. Consider this from his Wikipedia bio.

At the Media Research Center's 2007 DisHonors Awards Gala, Steele concluded a speech with the following: "I get a question all the time, 'Are you going to run again for office?' And I've thought about that, and I've come to realize that there's still some Democrats out there that I haven't ticked off yet. So, yeah, we're gonna do it again. We're gonna do it again, and all I have to say is, they haven't seen anything yet."

So I doubt you'll see any moderates or independents changing their opinions of the GOP because of him.

“stopping the godless homos from getting married”

Since this is offered as a quotation, could you please cite the source where the quotation comes from?

Or is it just a partisan stereotype coming in the guise of a quotation?

I don't even know who the last RNC chairman was.

I imagine, though, that he was all over Fox News, Meet the Press, all the rest, reciting the talking points, doing the sales job, smiling, shaking his head a little while the other guy talked. .

I doubt the new RNC chairman will be any different.
