Caroline Kennedy Withdraws from Senate Appointment

According to the NY Post, Miss Kennedy has withdrawn her name from the running to be appointed to fill former Senator Hillary Clinton’s seat.

Some speculate this may have to do with Senator Ted Kennedy’s being taken to the hospital during the inauguration ceremonies yesterday.

Others claimed she would be the best choice because of her fund-raising abilities for Governor Paterson’s re-election campaign yet to come, and other Democrats’ campaigns.

I know Caroline, and knew her mother through the publishing circuit. Caroline is a deep-hearted person there is no doubt, and she is a major philanthropic force in NY and east coast and inland, surrounding.

I’ll update this story later tonight when new facts can be confirmed. My hope is that she can see, even with propping from her relatives in various government positions, that the work of Senator is not in any way the same as the work she has been doing for decades…. that is, being a supporter of ideals and human spirit, rather than a leader whose earned their nuts in that particular arena.

Even though people who seem to be unpromising, often enough surprise the heck out of everyone… in a time like this, many are hoping for people who have more experience at the oars.

For now, the argument about her being appointed as Senator because of her being a money-bags for the Dems… well, that seems specious. My hunch is she will give her money to help Dems, regardless, appointed or not.

Past behavior, as they say, is often a good predictor of future behavior. She is a good-hearted philanthropist, in spades.

  • Some people serve politics better working outside the government than in. Caroline is one of them. I'd rather see the seat go to someone with more experience. Caroline should and most likely will continue being a major force in fund raising and promoting causes. Though I am saddened by Ted's declining health which may have affected her decision, I think Caroline's choice is for the best.
  • I'm not sure I agree w/The Maine View about where Caroline can best serve politics - I think she's young and has plenty of time ahead to develop new acumen and skills and apply them, if it's what she wants.

But I think, dr. e, that you do a great job really describing the yin and yang of why we could possibly talk ourselves into being okay with her (perhaps as she talked herself into wanting, thinking this was the right move) and how we also can see how really, right now, given the other options Paterson has, she's just not the strongest candidate for NY, IMO, and not that I think she would be wretched or any worse than others who actually were elected.

dear The Main View: I agree with you about Ted Kennedy. Although I know he lived a life that had a great dark choice that can never be undone, I also remember his huge craggy face as he went out on the boat to retrieve john-john's body. I'm not sure I can describe it, but the expression was one of a grief that seemed ancient ....had been with him for decades, not new.

about caroline, I think many agree with you.

dear Jillzie, yes, 'young' compared to me. lol. She's 51, a grandma age nonetheless. lol.

I agree that somehow we have elected 'qualified' people who turn out to be less than lizards. I cannot understand why some are not required beforehand to carry signs saying something like 'I have reptilian leanings', so we all can see them coming.

Youre right that Caroline's not the strongest candidate, but it's hard to tell who is. Well, Gov Paterson hopefully will give us his prom choice soon. (Tonight Fran Drescher the actress, said she was interested in the position. She was serious, and she's a NY-er, so... Who knew? There have certainly been stranger picks for the Legislature )
