Joe, I know the commentariat here has somewhat gone missing as it were (including my occasional misplaced and usually ill-advised commentary) but if I'm an example, we're still lurking, but just absorbing a fascinating moment.

In any case, I wanted to mention that TMV (you in particular) got a "shout out" (gah) today on XM/Sirius Satellite radio's "POTUS 08" channel for your round up. Keep up the terrific work, frontpagers! TMV is in a position to absolutely remain at least as relevant as any blog on the harder left or right, if Obama's recent examples are any indicator. Here's to a new year, and turning a page.

The spectacle we're seeing with the Inauguration and all the Hollywood-type celebs and all the rest, making it very lurid and decadent at the same time, is frustrating. But there's so much going on that some of it does manage to be good. One of the many (many, many) NPR shows this weekend, that typically is poor, actually was a splendid production -- "This American Life" featured comments by all kinds of Americans as well as answers to questions of some people on the show that were asked by the host. (One guy's comment describes so many of us non-liberals, who aren't being Bush-hater equivalents, but simply standing back and observing what our next President is going to do in office. And that show also illustrated the _true_ far social-and-religious-conservative Right, so much smaller than what so many claim and may even believe -- the example that show gave was a perfect example of that real kind of person -- he or she, on the (far) _Right_, is angry about the selection of Warren for an invocation, and considers Warren a "traitor" to "real" believers, etc.

Even some of what Obama himself has done is perfectly understandable. The train trip isn't just a gimmicky retro stunt. Obama is a creature of true-blue Dem Blue Nation Northeast Corridor and Big Other Cities Like Chicago. Of course it makes sense for him to take a train on the Northeast Corridor to get to Washington! As for Obama himself, he's carrying himself with class, as I suspected he would.

I found the level of interest remarkable (though it's not surprising given that this is a darling Dem replacing GEORGE BUSHHHHHHH) and had wanted to see how things went after the initial incredi-hype was replaced by some gloom that I believe was concern about the turnout that was developing because so many are reported to be in trouble given the state of today's economy. But what we saw is a huge turnout, large enough an event that even FOX with its flippant people had to set up their own reporting center in Washington that came complete with (real or fake? Probably real -- this isn't CNN or MSNBC) the Capitol dome in the background of where the broadcast was being made. (I was having coolant replaced in my vehicle and a block heater installed this morning and the customer lobby where I was, in Illinois, Land of Obama and Lincoln, Too, had FOX's morning or day blabber-airhead show playing on the teevee.)

The verdict, reached already, the day (King Day) before the Inauguration itself: It's a great turnout.

*** K. RITTER *** I hope you have been enjoying your Inauguration-related work and that you have a great time in DC tomorrow (the big day of days). Had I been able, I'd have gone to DC this weekend to see the crowds in person, and see the Inauguration, too.
