SD Our misery index is near the bottom on Forbes Misery Index. I don't think the Scandinavians are flocking to the US because their actual rates do approach 70%. This link comparing taxes to GDP show the "burden" on the US.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_...
We rank 30 out of 32 on the list.
Rudi,

Deduciton is money that was still spent. HOw many people used to go bankrupt trying not to pay taxes. IN the era of 70-70% tax rates, people would never take a lump sun on something like the lottery because the taxes were just too high.

Also, people used to cheat more on their taxes. How many people claimed a home office or had a rubber stamp machine so that they could expense living expenses as tax deductions.

If tax rates were really not that high, there never would have been a tax revolt to begin with. The rich may have had a way to avoid taxes but the upper middle class would not. If taxes were still at the 70 -90% rate the changes of someone like President Obama being elected would have been much lower. There would not have been the knowledge workers, the dot.coms, or the 20 something finance types that funded his campaign.

LOL - SD The r70% tax rate was a facade, no one ever paid anywhere close to that amount. Liberal deductions and 5 year averaging made 70% meaningless. How did the Bush and Kennedy dynasties kepp their monies and pass it to their shiftless spawn?

When you look at the national debt and the budget deficits, the time of 70% tax rates is almost sure to return. The government cannot run trillion dollar deficits forever to keep unions, government employees, and minority groups happy. Eventually, the Democratic Party dominance will allow for massive tax increases. Ask yourself when the last time the CBC and CHC opposed a tax increase. As they become the two dominate players in Congress, taxes will go up.

Saying that Republicans should go along with a massive expansion of government to look like Eisenhower is insane. It is just another way for conservatives to commit political suicide.

The Eisenhower Example for Today’s G.O.P.

Kasey S. Pipes on what modern Republicans can learn from Ike’s presidency.
