Women Speak Out on Violence in Gaza and Israel

The Feminist Peace Network has been providing links to a wide variety of voices and perspectives regarding the violence in Gaza and Israel for several days now.

Its most recent post includes entries from the European Commission and Chair of the Council of Women World Leaders Ministerial Initiative, Israel National News, Gaza resident Dr. Mona El-Farra, Palestinian mothers in the UK, the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom and Women of Color Network Australia, among others.

While I may not agree with all the positions of each of these perspectives, I’m thrilled that the Internet and blogging are being used to both disperse and organize these women’s sentiments. Moving to action is, of course, the far-tougher task.

My problem is that I think you will search in vain for any of these organizations to have criticized Hamas for anything, including the provocations that led to this war.

I agree, Jim – that is a real problem – but, to be fair, we would be searching in vain to find almost ANY organization, to be criticizing Hamas for anything. That and the failure of them to lean on the Arab nations are my two biggest annoyances in having a dialogue – the death, the violence, the impact, the humanitarian crisis – I can agree to seeing, acknowledging all that. But yes – it absolutely makes me go rigid with frustration when anyone who goes on about those issues refuses to engage in any discussion whatsoever about Hamas.

Frankly, I think that it is this failure to self-reflect that will do in both the residents of Gaza and Israel – although I believe that the relinquishing of the settlements is part of coming around on that point for Israel.
