Jim - you wrote what I believe is the crux of it all: "There is no reason for this in our country except the protection of profit and I just don't view corporate profit as being more important than human suffering and life."

I just couldn't comment when I first read this. I just couldn't. While he might ask us to not pity him and he doesn't want to be whiny, this quote just saddens me and angers me at the same time so much...

My doctor says it probably would not have made a difference, but I have delayed seeing a physician for two years, even though I have had a series of symptoms. I have been unable to qualify for health insurance that I could afford -- and even if I could, my cancer would have been deemed a preexisting condition unless I had the insurance before two years ago.

I cut back on everything -- movies, clothes, restaurants, hot water, air conditioning (in Texas), cost of each meal -- and saved up my money so that I could see a doctor. I still didn't want to spend so much, and delayed everything until the symptoms became too serious (I was taken to an emergency room -- and was booted to a county hospital when they found out I had no insurance, but made too much to qualify for medicaid.)

There is no reason for this in our country except the protection of profit and I just don't view corporate profit as being more important than human suffering and life.

Hmmmm. Why no comments from the "virtue of selfishness" crowd on the right? No diatribes about the "nanny state" and "socialized medicine?" Because here is someone who is dying for lack of access to health care. Oh. I forget. He blogs for the hated Daily Kos. And if he can't afford health insurance, that's his fault, and his problem, right?

Were he a citizen of any European nation, China, India, even Cuba, he would have sought medical care when he had symptoms. That's when medicine is most effective. In fact, preventive care is the most effective. But he's right, the insurance companies will fight tooth and nail to protect their profits. And I will be reviled and criticized for having the compassionate view that in the world's richest nation, everyone should have access to basic medical care.
