Gaza: People Standing Up, Governments Lying Down – Le Quotidien d’Oran of Algeria

To all readers of the Moderate Voice, HAPPY NEW YEAR from the people at WORLDMEETS.US

Once again, America’s image in the Muslim world is dropping due to Israel’s use of U.S.-made weapons and Washington’s perceived bias against the Palestinians and Arabs in general.

So will Israel’s latest military onslaught – which has resulted in large numbers of civilian casualties lead to some kind of solution?

For Algeria’s Le Quotidien d’Oran, K. Selim suggests we are on the doorstep of a much wider war:

“To utilize battlefield weapons against a city under siege for almost two years constitutes a war crime in true and proper form. The American missiles launched from American planes fired against unarmed cities are the realized expression of Israeli cowardice and the indignity of its supporters in Europe and the United States. … The Israelis aren’t wrong in proclaiming that their attack has only just begun. This is in fact just the beginning. The real Battle of Gaza will take place sooner or later; it will pit the armed forces of one against the other; and it will not be a face-to-face confrontation between an over-armed Goliath and a starving David.”

Algeria – Le Quotidien d’Oran – Original Article (French)
In the brutal imaginations of the colonialists, the abuse of power and crimes committed by their troops against unarmed population are “consequences of war” and, as such, are “battles” that bear the names of the cities where they occur. One recalls the Battle of Algiers , in which the civilian population opposed the hordes of paratroopers from an army of torturers. The atrocities committed by another colonial army in Gaza, with the blessing of the “civilized West,” are now beginning to be called the “Battle of Gaza.” This appellation is the precise measure of a capacity to distort reality into propaganda based on lies and disinformation.

While I understand why Israel has to respond in some way to the insane rocket attacks from Gaza, there is still the matter (as William Kern points out) of innocents being killed by American weapons, which you can be sure is the perception in the Arab world. There is also the matter of clear disconnect between leaders in Washington and the American people, which Glenn Greenwald talks about here:

Even if you think you are a firm supporter of the Israel response, the matter is complex enough to take another look. I hope the Obama administration is willing to take a more creative and less dogmatic approach to this problem than what we've seen in the past, otherewise there is no reason to expect we will see much of a solution to this ever downward spiral. Americans must have some reason to believe the billions of dollars they send to Israel every year are being spent in a way that results in more than just continued bloodshed.
