Merry Christmas 2 U: Rocking Around The Christmas Tree

Here’s a bit of Christmas music to get you on your way. In 1958 a young country-western singer named Brenda Lee did a song called “Rocking Around The Christmas Tree.” Two years later it became a huge hit — and a Christmas standard.

Here are two wonderful You Tube renditions of the song.

First, watch this young You Tuber deliver a superb performance of the Christmas standard — and give it a Latina twist:

Next, turn up your computer’s volume a bit and watch the original Brenda Lee perform the song live, one more time — in 1994, as a middle-aged woman…and deliver a note-per-note perfect re-performance with all of her original pizazz:

Oh dear. My first time on the blog and it was all going swimmingly well and I was making a few comments happily enough in my own harmless way. Then I stumbled into this, one of my least favourite Christmas songs.

In fairness, I have to admit to a very low tolerance of anything belonging to the genre “Christmas Songs”. Even the wonderful Kirsty McCall with the Pogues has now died the death of familiarity, such is the destructive power of the shopping mall loudspeaker system.

Unless, of course, it is sung by The Academy of St. Martin in the Fields Chorus led by Sir Neville Marriner, but I am probably out of date and he was being used to promote the iPod this year.

Ah well, maybe it is safer if I stick to the November postings on here.

You Tube #1: Jill Miller Zimon dyed her hair dark to disguise who it is. I was fooled. [wink]
