Assuming it works (and apparently to some degree anyway), developing a model system using bees to study the processes involved in cocaine use sounds like a pretty good idea to me. I presume that producing and maintaining a hive of bees is cheaper than maintaining a colony of, say, mice. The turn-around time is apparently faster. They have somewhat simpler and more accessible nervous systems. And because all of the worker bees in a hive are prodigy of a single queen, there's great genetic purity. That makes biomolecular manipulation much easier. So though it might sound like a huge waste of time to some, that doesn't mean it is.
