A basic principle of US conservatism, given the hijacking of the meaning of "liberalism" from its earlier classic meaning equivalent to "libertarianism," beginning around 1880 and at full throttle during the 1960s, is to oppose if not to merely retard the expansion of government authority and interventionism in this country, and replacement of the private sector with the public (government) and government authority for individual, responsible adult decision-making. "Return to traditional libertarian-heritage Americanism" remains a core principle of US conservatism, no matter to what extent the GOP has violated this. Fiscal responsibility and more broad issues like a return also to constitutional federalism (a revival of fidelity to the Constitution as well as federalist principles) is merely a pair of related issues. None are out of fashion, worth the contempt liberals show them, and so on. To the extent they were really sought, they would consitute a positive, attractive concept of a political agenda and philosophy as well as an often-antonymous choice against libs 'n' Dems.

If you look at the fiscal stimulus spending, the blue dog Democrats seem to be powerless. Are they willing to give up power for principle. I doubt it.
