Nothing To Cheer About

CNN has a video story up about high school cheerleaders who were kicked off the team, after it was revealed they had texted nude pictures of themselves to their boyfriends. Everyone CNN talked to was in 100% righteous fury mode, absolutely convinced the school did the right thing, lamenting how today’s girls are sluts, and slamming the parents for trying to get their daughters reinstated.

Can I try and offer a dissenting opinion here?

I agree with you… If I were still a teenager still learning boundaries and if I did something stupid (and I don't think anyone was causing anyone harm here) I would hope that someone would talk to me in a constructive, responsible way. No one is perfect and what right does the school have to punish kids for off-campus activity the school administrators don't agree with? Were the guys kicked off their team?

Otherwise it's OK (for example) the daughter of the governor of Alaska to get knocked up (isn't she a minor?) because she's going to enter into a loveless marriage with the father, who doesn't want to get married.

I swear these people are hypocrites. No wonder there's so much dysfunction in society.

The phrase, “He who is most guilty shouts the loudest” comes to mind.

I have to agree with Dave on this one. This is yet another case of people being punished for what is obviously a victimless crime.

One has to ask, which is worse (in terms of both long term and short term consequences)? Girls sending nude pictures of themselves to their boyfriends, or engaging in sexual intercourse with their boyfriends.

If these same girls had carelessly had unprotected sex with their boyfriends, would they have been kicked off the team? I think not.
