The Political Crisis in Canada

I’ve been closely monitoring the political situation here in Canada as events have unfolded over the past several days. Rarely are our politics so exciting.

I’ve written two articles for The Guardian, the first with some background and an overview of the situation, the second a response to yesterday’s developments (specifically, the governor general agreeing to Prime Minister Harper’s request to prorogue (or suspend) Parliament (so as to avoid a confidence motion). You can find them here:

A very Canadian coup

A sad day for Canada

For additional reaction, see my friend Grace’s post, “The Prorogation of Parliament by the Coward Stephen Harper.” She’s been much closer to the Canadian political scene than I have.

Also, see my “Bare Naked Politics: The ongoing situation in Canada.”

Please excuse the link-oriented post. I’ll be sure to post updates here going forward.
