"Most likely outcome: Limited or no success this time. But some kind of limited success once the new Congress takes over — assuming that President-Elect Barack Obama continues to talk about the need to do something and the need for a serious plan from the CEOs."

???

Unless they're bluffing or lying again, GM and Chrysler may file for bankruptcy before the new Congress (and Obama) takes over. Admittedly a more serious (and believeable) plan from the CEOs (and the UAW, which was omitted strangely, above) -- actually, separate plans, given they are separate companies in different situations, even with the same general failed, decades-obsolete business and labor model -- would be in order, but what does that mean? Surely not the foolish substitution of politics in place of soundness, as in the case of environmentalists' demands.

Any bailout is likely to be motivated at this point by concern about job loss, which itself has been hyped by Detroit and its defenders and hasn't elicited much sympathy from the public, not only because of the arrogant and obsolete nature of Detroit but also because of its so-much-smaller market share now than the 1950s and 1960s from which some defenders appear to view Detroit.

Current debate (the thread's title is actually a question, not a statement)

http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/bailout-watch-...

The bailout hearing progress -- live blogs, plenty of comments (esp. the N.Y.
