Well, I don;t see that as a tactic they would likely embrace. Right now they are winning their objective (hard currency) by not abusing those they capture. This is why the ransoms are being paid. As soon as countries and companies believe that the goal is mayhem, and the paying of ransom buys them nothing, then there will be a HUGE push for military intervention.

Stopping piracy is hard, nasty work, as history has shown. As long as the pirates can keep the nation-states from deciding they have no choice but to wipe them out (and that means wiping out the port cities and civilians supporting and benefiting from their illegal activity), they are safe.

Some of us have thought for years about not only pirates, but terrorists (which may blend or overlap in time, as they may have already done off Africa). In addition to rob-n-rape-n-burn standard stuff, it was my view that someday pirates might just want to kill and maim -- using one or more anti-ship missiles to do this.

I had thought that if anything, US-hatred by the world's lowlifes would result in a terrorist attack in the Caribbean during winter or holiday seasonal cruise activity there, if not an attack on the port of Miami.
