I'm very impressed by Obama's appointments. Clinton, Jones and Gates comprise a smart, experienced, non-ideological team.

But there is an issue still. Why was there no designation of the top leaders of the intelligence community as a key part of Obama’s national security team? I raised this question on my blog yesterday — see http://thepurplecenter.blogspot.com/2008/12/blo....

I think it’s noteworthy that the senior leadership on national security did not in include a nominee for DNI or director of CIA, while UN Ambassador, AG and Homeland Security were included.

It’s certainly worthy of comment but I haven’t seen any. And to my knowledge, no reporter asked about it at the news confrence, even though most of the rumors up to a few days ago included some very specific apparent leaks about a new DNI.

Is it a slap at the IC? A deliberate downgrading? A mistake? What?

Chris WWW: Gates gives Obama a pass on defense, which is a weak point of his and the Dems. More to the point, Gates (while he holds the post; who says he'll stay there for four years?) gives Obama insight into where to go looking to raid Defense for money to spend elsewhere, while giving Obama a nice official-appearing hatchet man to support the case for reductions and terminations of programs. Now, if he buckles and yields to the special interests who will defend every existing program and the growth for Defense sought by the Bush people and by these interests, well, then you have an even better excuse to be cynical.

Don't worry, kids. Keep those stars in your teary, dewy eyes at least until the inauguration.

Besides, if The Great One can single-handedly [in advocates' historical accounts] rescue the economy, the lefties of all kinds — “progressives,” radicals, Greens (cap or small G) or whatever else they choose to call themselves can stir more than they're already stirring, as a repaired economy means money can be spent on other things and other projects can take center stage [pun intended].
