No doubt the authorities here in the States are thinking ahead to the day after Thanksgiving. Even with a poor economy it's likely to be a big shopping event and big-crowd event. (Shopping centers are as tempting as subway systems...)

The modus operandi differs from previous attacks in Jaipur, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, & Delhi. Those were all bombs left in lunchboxes or in garbage cans, the suspects were gone by the time they detonated.

This attack was brazen, and direct (and still ongoing...). There were no explosives - other than grenades.

To me, it feels like a distraction - and like Al Qaeda, not the Indian Mujahadeen (or any Pakistani/ISI influence).

My guess is AQ organized this to throw people off the scent - figuring a few guys with AK47s and grenades might kill a dozen or so before being mowed down by cops. It would grab attention, and keep the focus elsewhere while another bigger, more deadly attack takes place in another city within the next 24-48 hours. (perhaps within India, perhaps not - I noticed the terror alert for the NY city subways seemed to be released at virtually the same time as the attacks began - even before).

I hope I'm wrong, and I hope the situation here resolves itself quickly - the city has a weird, surreal feel to it right now. Life seems to be trying to go on, but as I write this there are still as many as 100+ hostages in two hotels, and no one seems to have any idea of who is behind it. Add to that the killing of the anti-terrorism chief outside of a hospital as the attacks began...

It's amazing what 20 or so armed men can do to a city of 20 million...

-Wil Robinson in Mumbai

www.internationalpoliticalwill.com/
