I agree. The reason, part of it, is the mission the paper's founder put out that it would "injure no man but bless all mankind." Its staff is comprised of serious journalists from all over the world. I contributed my first piece for the CSM from New Delhi, India in the mid-70s and from 1975-1978 was the Monitor's Special Correspondent in Madrid. That was not the same as Special To. Both were contributors but this was then described to me as a "full time contributor" -- no salary but paid per piece and I sent them a lot of articles. When I'd visit the U.S. during that time, I'd go to their offices and their great, late Overseas Editor Geoffrey Godsell would have a desk waiting for me. He was replaced by the equally great David Anable, who went on to teach journalism after some top CSMers quit in the late 80s (I believe) after the mother church moved some resources from the paper to put into an illfated radio program. I worked for other news organizations on the staffs of papers after, but writing for the Monitor and being advised and edited by their editors was the greatest and most cherished journalistic experience of my life. I really have to do a post on all of this one day. I still consider it a paper in a class by itself.. I love reading it and have tended to link to it more recently and probably will much more in coming months and years on TMV.

The CS Monitor is one of the best news sites on the web, and in my view, one of the "unsung heroes." It tends to be quite middle-of-the-road politically, which is rare these days.
