The GOP has become a caricature of itself— Ronald Reagan was successful because he was guided by certain beliefs and was able to communicate them to others- but he never allowed ideology to trump what he felt most voters wanted.

Also, there's a difference between a strong defense and an arrogant bullying offense-and today's GOP needs to learn it. I can tell from Michael's piece that he hasn't done the self-examination that would get the party back on track.

Pretty words, but Reagan doesn't get it. The Balkanization happened for a reason and the GOP needs to do the self-examination necessary to understand those reasons before it can coalesce in any healthy way. There are clear lessons to be learned from the last decade or so, but they won't be learned if there is a determination among some to remain in the dark.
