Rudi -- I believe Obama is not going to be like Clinton (the _real_ Dixie Mafia and other cronies from Arkansas and combining them with activists in the first term, more pragmatic choices in the second) or George W. Bush (bringing with him his Texas contingent, combined with Reagan-Bush retreads). It's not even a combination only of Chicago people and Clinton people (some retreads, others simply happening to have risen to prominence in the Clinton years) and cream skimmings from the until-now-largely-unnoticed "black elite." Other Dem people who have been appearing with him in public and otherwise associating with him* such as Janet Napolitano, stars outside Washington itself, in other words, are coming into his administration.

In addition, we've seen one change today that was developing that shows a move leftward in the Dem Congress and a different orientation than previously. Waxman from Hollywood area (CA) is replacing Dingell (from Dearborn and one with direct ties into Detroit automaker society, not only the industry) to lead the Energy and Commerce Committee. This is not only a payback _for_ Nancy Pelosi but a definitely leftward shift and a likely true change. Expect him to be tougher on the auto makers (in Detroit's case, those that survive) and to threaten other environmentalist policy goals of concern to many of us. For starry-eyed kids and environmentalists, well, you people now get to gloat, gloat, gloat. (And he's likely to increase the ambition as well as regulatory nature of health care reform. And the health insurers are _already_ trying to reach accomodation with Washington. This, _prior_ to the replacement of Dingell by an environmentalist and anti-corporate attack dog!)

http://features.csmonitor.com/environment/2008/...

http://www.freep.com/article/20081120/NEWS15/81...

http://detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/2...

http://thehill.com/leading-the-news/waxman-wres...

http://blogs.wsj.com/health/2008/11/20/will-wax...

http://www.forbes.com/business/2008/11/20/waxma...

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/capitol-briefi...

Today, with Waxman replacing Dingell, change is definitely happening.
