kritt,

the party in power has stayed in power in Chicago for over 50 years. There is no push to throw people out of power in the non-white , non-middle and upper middle class communities. the Repulbicans face the problem of having less than half of the population willing to even consider voting for a Repulbicans. That is why they spend zero dollars in California durng the campaign.

Politics may seem cyclical but demographics is linear and the demographics are against the Repulbicans.

Inevitably, the Democrats will become complacent and sloppy, or even corrupt.

When that happens a new version of the Republican Revolution (perhaps led by the Newtster himself!) will spring up, fed by populist outrage. Dumping the party in power will become the new rage, and some tech-savvy up-and-comer will join with the latest version of Atwater or Rove to unseat them en masse.

Politics is cyclical-- three years ago we were sounding a death knell for the Democrats. Abramoff, Duke Cunningham, Foley and the ineptness of Bush/Cheney gave the party new life.

Anyone who believes that blacks or Hispanics will ever vote for the more conservative party is the one who is a fool. There is no chance of the Republicans getting more than a 1/3 of the Hispanics vote and that will go down as their are more Mexicans and fewer Cubans.

By permitting Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and others to hijack The Republican Party under the guise of being conservative, with a hidden agenda to spew hatred and racism on the air ways is not the proper method to rally minorities to the party. Regardless of what idiots like Limbaugh and Hannity says, minority votes, particular the Hispanic votes will be a major factor in electing a Republican President in 2012.
Some one in the party leadership needs to ask these fools to shut up!!!

The Repulbican Party is going to collapse. Demographics ensure that in the long run that the Republican party will be irrelevant. thus the question is does the U.S. become a one party state or does a new party spring up. Consdiering that any new party (Green or Christian Democrats) would have exactly the same demographic problems that the current Repulblican Party has, it is more likely that the U.S. will be left with a one party state.

Thus, is having one party the same as having no politics parties? The answer is no. The Democratic Party will stay relevant since the easiest way to get on the ballot will be to win the Democratic primary. Thus, the real elections will occur in the Democratic Primary and the general election will be a moot exercise to confimr the results of the primary. See the municiple elections in any urban city where the elections are partisan.

That leaves each office open once per generation when the current holder retires or moves on and multiple candidates compete in the Democratic primary to hold the office for the next twenty years. Seniority rules will reinforce the idea that you had better keep reelecting your Senator or Comgressman so that your district will eventually have some power. There will also be the problem of current office holders willing their seats to relatives (See everything from Bud Schuster to Joe Biden.

PattonGuy -- Yes, disagreements will continue, and should continue, but they don't need the mantra of parties to fuel and/or pollute them. It seems to me that too many of our debates today are waged on faux party lines, rather than on substantive policy lines. I'll try to clarify that point in future posts.

I've been wondering something similar, only more along the lines of a new party coming out of the remnants of the Republican party, a la Whig Party. The Republicans, when they were founded in 1856, drew heavily from northern abolitionist Whigs, who disliked the southern wing of the party. So will the Republican party pull out of their death spiral? Or will the Republican Party be consigned to history to make way for another party? Honestly, I think it's too early to write the Republicans off. Zell Miller thought he was writing the obituary of the Democrats a few years ago, and boy, was he wrong. All of this post-partisan stuff is rubbish. People will disagree with each other for as long as there are politics and people to take part in them.
