and Dear Anyone and EAveryone:
I may not have emphasized it enough in the above article, but doing a Stand Down for Vets in your city/ town is not hard. Contact your local religious hospital that often treats vets from the streets, and the shelters in your area. Look online at the Purple Heart Association for a chapter in your town. Also call Veteran's of Foreign Wars in your town. You are looking for the folks who already help homeless vets, and you can organize/ join in from there. If you need more info on 'how to,' please send an email to Joe Gandelman, our Ed. in Chief. He most often knows my whereabouts underground and will get your message to me.

For those in need, please talk to different vets at the VFW who are involved in various layers of vet help; they know the good guys and the not so hot ones, and will be able to advise you. If your own VFW doesnt have the answers for you, go online and contact a VFW in another city. Brother/ sisters under the skin, no matter the locale.

dr.e

You're right. The difference between a homeless vet and living on the Rosebud isn't much. I've lived on the Rosebud rez and I've been a homeless vet and it really wasn't much different.
Hopeless and waiting to die is the state of mind for both places.

I think it's outstanding that the people in your area are working to help the Vets. I've not seen anything like what you're doing over there. Then again, I avoid anything to do with the V.A. ever since they put in me in a hospital and didn't want to let me go. (I did catch that you weren't with the VA but a vets group.. I was just thinking about my reaction to seeing any sort of VA doctor .. I run for my life. :P)

I think what yawl are doing is wonderful! I think it's the best type of work helping people in trouble.
I think we can all learn from it too. If everyone would reach out and help ...what a day that would be, eh?

As for the vets ...well...
Perhaps one day countries won't be willing to enlist and/or draft people for a war then afterward pretend they don't exist.
BETTER IDEA..
Perhaps one day countries won't be willing to engage in war. :)
What a concept, eh? :P

Keep that good heart Doc! Many of us really appreciate how much you care for people.

the Ghost

Dear Dr. E

What I did (write a little post) is nothing compared to what your husband and 59 other "working women and men veterans" (I know you are included) have done this year--and have done for the past five years--for our veterans in Denver. My thanks--our thanks--to them and you.

As to the "Curse of “See-through-ish," it is not only happening with respect to our veterans, the poor, the disheveld, etc. It is happening to all of us when we allow the shame and tragedy of wars, famine, natural and man-made tragedies and disasters ,all arounf the world (and in our own country) reduced to two-inch columns buried deep in the inisde pages of our newspapers, or relegated to a running script on our televisions while the "much more important" scandals of the day of our elections pre-empt everything else.

What a shame.

Thanks again,

Dorian
