Ah. . .sad to hear this news. . . spent two years in Rhodesia just as the country was becoming independent Zimbabwe. . . and would often travel to South Africa. . .how i remember going into the townships and markets and hearing the wonderful- full- sultry- intoxicating music of Makeba. . . it filled so many corners of disparity and desolation with vitality-and jubilation in Southern Africa. . .like Ghostdream wondered i was one of those that opened to World music through the richness of Africa's rhythms and Makeba. . . the language i learned was Sindebele. . .and it had the clicks which i learned from the children. . .too many memories. . .so often wonder about those children are now doing in Zimbabwe these days ?. . .But know the music is still holding their souls with joy, strength and indomitably . . .Surely our world will miss Makeba. . .but can imagine the happiness and excitement of the angels and saints to have her back home and surely the celestial choir must be rejoicing. . .

I am so sad. I adored her, loved her music. As far as I'm concerned Makeba was the person who opened up "world music" to the majority of the western world. I wonder how many people who are currently listening to some of the newer singers and groups out of Africa/ India/ South America/ China / Russia / etc. realize that it was people like Miriam Makeba that opened up the minds and hearts of people worldwide and made their hearts clamor for more.
I will truly mourn her passing.

I just put on my favorite song by Ms. Makeba (Hapo Zamani ) to celebrate her music and her life.
I'll be lighting a candle for her today.

Currently in sorrow,
Ghosty
