I haven’t read much of his work lately, but this contribution reminded me why P.J. O’Rourke is one of my favorite writers. Agree with him or not, he remains one of the last, simultaneously entertaining and honest voices among American essayists.
Warning: The linked article is from The Weekly Standard; it is not moderate and provides equal-opportunity offense for all political persuasions — precisely why I enjoyed it.
One of the best reads in a long time, and a pleasurable way to spend part of my Sunday after mulching the leaves and while waiting for the football game to start. Thanks!
But, but P.J…. much of your party does blindly worship the free market as the solution to all of our problems. P.J., my foolish elephant worshiper, lines like these
are really one of the big reasons your party is out of power now. There is little honesty or integrity in your writing, P.J., just the same old denigration of those who seriously doubt the all-encompassing wisdom of the free market. Because this was the funniest thing in the entire rant: “We, the conservatives, who do understand the free market…”. Priceless.
Personally, I got a good laugh from it myself. Yeah its a bit over the top about some of the liberal stuff Jim quoted… But the more voices out there preaching a return to socialy liberal fiscally conservative stance there are, the better. Then maybe it will happen.
