P.J. O’Rourke Schools … Everybody

I haven’t read much of his work lately, but this contribution reminded me why P.J. O’Rourke is one of my favorite writers. Agree with him or not, he remains one of the last, simultaneously entertaining and honest voices among American essayists.

Warning: The linked article is from The Weekly Standard; it is not moderate and provides equal-opportunity offense for all political persuasions — precisely why I enjoyed it.

  • One of the best reads in a long time, and a pleasurable way to spend part of my Sunday after mulching the leaves and while waiting for the football game to start. Thanks!

But, but P.J.... much of your party does blindly worship the free market as the solution to all of our problems. P.J., my foolish elephant worshiper, lines like these

None of this is the fault of the left. After the events of the 20th century--national socialism, international socialism, inter-species socialism from Earth First--anyone who is still on the left is obviously insane and not responsible for his or her actions.
    ...
Nobody with kids is a liberal, except maybe one pothead in Marin County.
    ...
Liberals consider people to be nuisances.
    ...
And we could get up again with dignity intact, dust ourselves off, and take another punch at the liberal bully-boys who want to snatch the citizenry's freedom and tuck that freedom, like a trophy feather, into the hatbands of their greasy political bowlers.

are really one of the big reasons your party is out of power now. There is little honesty or integrity in your writing, P.J., just the same old denigration of those who seriously doubt the all-encompassing wisdom of the free market. Because this was the funniest thing in the entire rant: "We, the conservatives, who do understand the free market...". Priceless.

Personally, I got a good laugh from it myself. Yeah its a bit over the top about some of the liberal stuff Jim quoted... But the more voices out there preaching a return to socialy liberal fiscally conservative stance there are, the better. Then maybe it will happen.
